Apple’s storefront design symmetry

Apple is known for its attention to detail, even in the smallest of things, and here’s another example. ifoapplestore points to Apple’s newly constructed 4th Street Store in Berkeley, California which is constructed to be symmetrical and aligned. The 76 centimeter stone tiles within the store are the focal point of this design. Both the store’s windows panels and the sidewalk tiles outside the store are a multiple of this 76 cm dimension. It’s a subtle design element that is pleasing to the eyes and may help draw traffic into the new retail store.

Yale Med School students get iPads

Yale School of Medicine will supply all of its students with an iPad 2. The program is meant to reduce paper use and make course materials more accessible. The school’s assistant dean for curriculum Michael Schwartz says the students will be able to keep the iPads until they graduate, and use them to download the full curriculum and patient information.

The program will distribute 520 iPads. If that sounds expensive, consider this: Dean Schwartz notes that the school spends about US$ 100,000 per year to copy, collate and distribute course materials. So far, he’s spent about $ 600,000 on the iPad program. Within a few years, Schwartz notes, money saved on printing costs will pay for the initiative.

After a successful pilot program last year, the school decided on some apps to include (GoodReader among them) as well as Bluetooth keyboards. Good luck to Yale’s med students, faculty and staff. May the program be a success.

iTunes Match beta now open to developers

iTunes Match, Apple’s answer to the “online music locker” service, has just entered beta according to an email sent out to members of the Developer Program. iTunes Match will store users’ music libraries in iCloud, allowing anywhere/anytime access to the entire library from any device.

iTunes Match is now available to US-based developers, and subscribers will receive iTunes Match service both during the beta period and an additional three months beyond the beta period for free.

Concurrent with the iTunes Match beta is a new beta version of iTunes 10.5, beta 6.1. Developers must download this newest beta of iTunes in order to enable iTunes Match. Apple encourages developers to continue maintaining backups of their iTunes libraries, as iCloud libraries may be reset periodically during the beta.

iTunes Match will cost US$ 24.99 per year when it launches. Its public release is expected to concur with that of iOS 5, iTunes 10.5, iCloud, and possibly OS X Lion 10.7.2, all of which may debut in either September or October.
