First iOS 6.1.1 beta doesn’t interfere with evasi0n jailbreak

If you’ve jailbroken your iOS device running version 6.1 of Apple’s mobile software, it doesn’t appear that your heart will be broken by the upcoming 6.1.1 release — at least not yet. Ars Technica reports that folks with access to the iOS 6.1.1 beta have been able to successfully install it on jailbroken devices without the jailbreak being, er, broken.

Now, it’s worth noting that Apple has just released the first of what could be several betas of 6.1.1 and did so very close to Monday’s launch of the evasi0n jailbreak. It could simply be a case of the company not having a “fix” for the jailbreak in place in this beta, and that it intends to patch it into oblivion in a subsequent 6.1.1 beta. Still, at least for now jailbreakers can breathe a sigh of relief. We’ll let you know when it’s time to change it to one of disappointment.

Daily iPhone App: Wizardlings doesn’t quite live up to its reputation

Wizardlings has quite the pedigree: Not only was it published by Square Enix (who are of course legendary for their JRPGs), but it was created by Liv Games, the great indie company behind the iOS hits Legendary Wars and Monster Wars. Unfortunately, Wizardlings is a pretty simple app designed for a very casual audience. You start off as a young wizard and make your way around a grid-based world, trying to complete quests and collect items as you go.

And… that’s pretty much it. There is some combat, as you’ll find various creatures on the way, and there is a very light crafting mechanic requiring you to pick up elements and put them together into spells and treasure sets, but all of this is basically governed by just tapping on squares as you go. The whole affair isn’t very deep, and as a result it’s not very interesting.

Still, Liv Games knows how to make a colorful title, and despite the game’s simplicity, it can be addictive to tap square after square to see what you can find. As you can see in the video below, I can’t help tapping even as I’m saying how boring it can be to just tap and tap again. But Wizardlings is a free download, so if you want to head out for a little mindless exploration, give it a try.

Apple doesn’t rely on market research, says marketing chief Phil Schiller

In his brief time on the stand at Tuesday’s Apple v. Samsung court proceedings, Apple Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller said the company doesn’t rely on “typical” market studies to create its products.

Samsung was dressed down in court on Tuesday after the company leaked evidence excluded from the proceedings to media outlets and issued an out-of-court statement saying the exhibits “would have established beyond doubt that Samsung did not copy the iPhone design.”

Google Chrome users with Apple’s next-generation 15-inch MacBook Pro can now take advantage of the high-resolution Retina display with their browser.

App usage doesn’t drop during Super Bowl — except during halftime

Mobile advertiser Flurry’s latest report, on app usage during the Super Bowl, is fascinating for those of us who have been following the “second screen” phenomenon: The tendency of mobile device users to use their devices while also watching television or other media. Flurry notes that during last week’s big game, not only was the app audience (according to the apps that the company is actually monitoring) almost as large as the Super Bowl audience as a whole, but as you can see above, app usage steadily grew throughout the game.

With one interesting exception, that is: During the Madonna halftime show. During the show itself, viewers finally looked away from their smartphone devices and tuned into the television. Obviously not all of them did, but that is a big enough dip (along with the drop during the final minutes of the game) to say that yes, there’s a big correlation here between what people are seeing on their televisions and how they’re using their mobile devices.

The opposite story is also true: Flurry was actually able to rank app usage versus the most and least popular commercials during the game. As you can see from the final charts in their report, on commercials that people generally liked and paid attention to, app usage dropped significantly. That’s very intriguing: Most of the second screen work brands have done so far is designed to keep people using ads during commercials, but a study like this would suggest that customers would rather pay attention to good commercials. They postpone their interaction with those “marquee” ads until later on — or during other ads, including possibly those of competitors.

At any rate, this study definitely shines a new light on this second screen thinking, and we might see some new trends in apps trying to make use of this habit going forward.

Australian Pilot sues because he doesn’t have an iPad

Virgin Australia Airlines First Officer David Kloster is suing his employer for almost one million dollars, claiming he hurt his back while lugging around almost 40 pounds of charts and manuals. Documents filed with the Queensland Supreme Court on Kloster’s behalf state that the airline “…failed to have in place a system of work whereby charts and rules could have been left on board its aircraft or kept electronically on an iPad.” The lawsuit has been reported by the Daily Telegraph in Australia.

Kloster said he was injured lifting his flight bag while getting on a bus in 2009. He is currently suing for future economic loss, medical expenses and other costs.

The airline has not officially responded to the suit, but spokesperson Emma Copeman has said “Virgin Australia takes its obligations with respect to protecting the health and safety of those involved in its operations very seriously.” Virgin Australia has said it plans to switch to iPads in the cockpit this year.

One obvious problem for Kloster is that his accident happened in December of 2009. The iPad did not go on sale until May of 2010.

In the Apple/Samsung lawsuit, the picture doesn’t tell the story

There are some Android cheerleaders out there passing around the error-ridden image above, minus the big red stamp, of course. The Android advocates’ assertions are that Apple is accusing Samsung of ripping off the iPhone (which was first shown in January 2007) when, in actuality, the iPhone looks remarkably similar to the Samsung F700, which was announced at CeBIT in 2006. Oh, smack! Right? Wrong.

While the F700 was indeed announced at CeBIT in 2006, the actual phone wasn’t shown until February 2007 — a month after Apple showed off the iPhone. “The F700 was rushed out to show after the iPhone’s debut, and was regarded as an ‘answer to the iPhone’ by reports of the day, one of which observed that it ‘looks awfully familiar’,” according to AppleInsider, which has put together an excellent post debunking the above image.

“LOL @ Apple?” More like “LOL @ Android Photoshoppers.”
