Samsung’s sought ITC ban would be limited to older iPhones and iPads, company admits

In a filing with the U.S. International Trade Commission, Samsung confirmed that its declared standard essential wireless patents only apply to older iOS devices due to hardware changes in more recent versions, meaning that a proposed ban on the products would be somewhat limited if enforced.

A software update released on Friday will give iPhone 5 users on T-Mobile access to the carrier’s LTE network, in addition to adding a number of other features like Visual Voicemail

Apple’s main rival Samsung pre-announced its earnings on Friday, revealing that the company had an even stronger-than-expected quarter with operating profits of 8.7 trillion won, or $ 7.7 billion U.S.

Apple’s 7.85-inch iPad mini and future iPads may adopt ITO film coating

A so-called ‘iPad mini’ reportedly in the works at Apple for a late 2012 release may be the first of the company’s tablet devices to include displays coated with indium tin oxide (ITO), an electrically conductive transparent substance that acts as an EMI shield and helps reduce radio interference.

An Apple patent application published on Thursday shows the company is investigating illuminated touchpad technology extended from research done on the legacy iPod’s touch wheel, possibly for use in its MacBook line of laptops or a peripheral device like the Magic Trackpad.

Samsung marched a number of witnesses to the stand on Wednesday in efforts to rebut Apple’s patent infringement claims, including an industrial designer involved in the design of the original Galaxy Tab 10.1 and a number of Galaxy smartphones.

Samsung’s tablets returned after buyers realized they weren’t iPads

New documents made public in the legal feud between Apple and Samsung indicate among other things that retailer Best Buy had told Samsung it was processing Galaxy Tab returns from unhappy customers who thought they were getting an iPad.

Though Apple is tight-lipped about the profitability of its individual products, a court filing in the company’s ongoing lawsuit with Samsung has revealed that the carrier-subsidized iPhone has margins north of 50 percent, nearly twice as high as the iPad.

Apple’s reasons for purchasing AuthenTec for $ 356 million remain unknown, but the company’s products may lead to secure fingerprint sensing technology for a future iPhone that could be tied in to a mobile e-wallet service, industry watchers believe.

Tennessee drivers can use iPads to quickly renew drivers licenses

Tennessee drivers can use iPads to quickly renew drivers licenses

If you’re a licensed driver in the state of Tennessee, don’t be surprised if you see an iPad on your next visit to the local driver service center. Tennessee’s Department of Safety and Homeland Security recently spent US$ 79,200 to install 72 iPad kiosks inside 26 of those service centers for the purpose of speeding up driver’s license renewals.

The kiosks are called ASSETS (Automatic Self-Service Electronic Terminals) and are targeted for the service centers in high-population areas where waiting in line for a driver’s license renewal has become an annoying issue.

Should you become bored waiting in line, you can use the kiosk to fill out a form and pay with a debit or credit card. You can change your home address and pay reinstatement fees, and the new license is available within minutes.

Tennesseans who wish to take advantage of the ASSETS can find the nearest location in this PDF document.

The iPad’s main competition is the old iPad

The iPad's main competition is the old iPadWhile manufacturers struggle to compete with the iPad, Apple has managed to do so successfully. In fact, current demand for the iPad 2 is nearly equal to that of the new iPad.

The iPad 2 dropped in price by $ 100 when the new iPad was introduced. A recent Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) report notes that the iPad 2 accounted for 41% of all iPad sales since the new iPad was launched in March, 2012.

Apple CEO Tim Cook noted that the drop would make the device more appealing to price-sensitive customers. CIRP partner Josh Lowitz agrees, telling AllThingsD, “The lower price of the iPad 2 seems to be attracting many new buyers, and bringing thriftier customers into the fold…our data suggests that a lot of iPad buyers bought iPad 2s right up to and after the launch of the new iPad.”

How does a device compete with the iPad, then? It seems step one is, “be an iPad.”

Apple’s US K12 customers snapped up two iPads for every Mac this quarter

Apple’s chief financial officer Peter Oppenheimer noted in the company’s Q2 conference call that US K-12 education customers had purchased twice as many iPads as Macs, despite also setting a new record in Mac sales for the quarter.

Due to overwhelming worldwide demand, customers hoping to buy a new iPad may see longer than usual wait times in some markets as Apple fights to ramp up supply.

Apple’s chief executive Tim Cook doesn’t see success in Microsoft’s strategy to have Windows 8 power everything from notebooks to tablets to hybrid transforming devices, comparing their convergence to a refrigerator with toaster functions tacked on the side.
