Rogers, BCE rumored to already have Apple ‘iTV’ prototype in their labs

A new report claims Canadian telecoms Rogers and Bell Canada have an early version of a much-rumored Apple television set in their labs and are in negotiations with the company to enter into a partnership for the device.

The discovery of newly-upgraded high-DPI UI elements in Mac OS X 10.7.3 has led to some speculation that Apple is continuing to lay the groundwork for high-resolution Mac displays that approach the pixel density of its Retina Displays.

Apple has warned App Store developers against using promotional services that seek to increase the visibility of their titles by automating sales to inflate their apps’ apparent popularity or by posting phony reviews, threatening to terminate their accounts if they do. Related Posts:

Elliptic Labs set to save your iPad from smudges with 3D gesture-sensing dock (video)

The dream of kitchen computing still isn’t here, with many chefs forced to read from archaic paper-based recipe lists or, worse yet, memorize the things. Maybe all we need is a way to interact with our gadgets without getting them all messy, and maybe Elliptic Labs can get us there. Finally. The company has been teasing us with its 3D gesture interface for years now and it looks set to finally show off an actual product, a motion-sensing iPad dock prototype making its debut at CES in a few weeks. The idea is you perch this sucker in your kitchen and it gives you full control whether you’re kneading sourdough or mixing meatballs, keeping your tablet streak-free — and hygienic. That seems like somewhat limited usefulness to us, but check out the video of an earlier prototype below and see if it doesn’t make you want to bake some cookies. And, if it does, feel free to bring us some.

Aircord Lab's N-3D concept turns iPad into the world's least practical 3D display (video)

Think giant active-shutter glasses are a roadblock to 3D adoption? Wait until you get a load of this, the N-3D from Aircord Labs, a glass pyramid with semi-reflective sides that allows you to peer through while reflecting the image of a screen above. In this case the screen is provided by an iPad which, as you can see in the video below, separately renders three sides of an object. Each slab of glass reflects a different rendering and, hey presto, changeable perspective as you move from side to side, reducing the usable screen real-estate on the iPad by at least a third and producing an effect slightly less compelling, but slightly more portable, than that Time Traveler arcade game that used to take four whole quarters to play. No word on whether there will ever be a take-home version, but get yourself a sheet of plexiglass and you could probably make your own.

Illusion Labs Touchgrind – Trailer 2

In a world first, Illusion Labs has created a multitouch skate game for the iPhone: Touchgrind. The game is unique in that finger gestures are used for control, similar to the motion of the legs and feet on a real skateboard. Butler Robot Can Fetch Drinks, Snacks

Meet HERB, a robot from Intel’s research labs that can fetch drinks, get a pack of chips and sort dishes. HERB or the Home Exploring Robotic Butler is a project from Intel’s personal robotics group. The robot sits on a tricked-out Segway base and has arms that are driven by cables to allow it to be extremely dexterous. A spinning laser on the top of the robot help generates 3-D data so robot can identify objects. There’s also a camera to help it “see.” “It (the robot) looks big but it will fit through most doorways,” says Siddhartha Srinivasa, an Intel researcher who is working on the project. “It’s about a foot longer than the human wingspan.” Users can tell HERB what they need using an iPhone interface that the team built. There’s also a voice recognition program in the works so you can just tell the robot loud what you want it to do. The HERB project has been in the works for nearly four years. Intel showed the robot’s latest features at its annual research day fest on Wednesday. HERB is just one of the many robotics project that is trying to teach machines how to do everyday tasks.  Willow Garage, a Palo Alto, California based startup has a robot called PR2 that is being trained to sort laundry and fold towels . The idea is to teach robots to go beyond carefully structured and repetitive tasks so they can move beyond factories. Check out the video of HERB at work. HERB doesn’t move fast but if you could just sit on the couch and have it bring a bottle of beer every time, a few seconds delay shouldn’t bother you that much.
