Dan Hesse certain the iPhone will be profitable for Sprint

Sprint’s CEO Dan Hesse signed an estimated US$ 15.5 billion deal with Apple to carry the iPhone. After a less than stellar quarterly performance, the CEO is trying to quell shareholder discontent by publicly defending his decision, says a report in AllThingsD.

Speaking at an annual shareholders meeting, Hesse assured investors that “carrying the iPhone will be quite profitable.” Customers will join Sprint to get the iPhone on an unlimited plan and will stay because most people who buy the phone are happy with their purchase. The iPhone will increase the number of long-term customers with revenue-generating data plans which is good for Sprint’s bottom line. Sprint won’t see these benefits until 2015, but the CEO believes the iPhone is worth the wait.

Viddy gets celebrity backing from Will Smith, Jay-Z companies

Video-sharing app Viddy got a pretty nice financial boost on Monday, with backing from production companies that Jay-Z (Roc Nation) and Will Smith (Overbrook Entertainment) head. The New York Times says they join $ 6 million in funding that Viddy received from traditional venture capitalists in February.

Viddy, released in 2011, lets users upload 15-second videos with a number of filters — think Instagram for video.

The New York Times claims the service currently has 10 million users, with an additional 300,000 signing up per day. Those number of signups per day seems unrealistically high, especially since Viddy posted on April 11 that the site has 4 million users, with 100,000 joining per day. If the numbers provided by the NYT are correct, that would mean more than 109.5 million would join Viddy within the next year. Compare it to Instagram, which launched in October 2010 and has 27 million users as of the end of March.

Steve Sande took a look at Viddy last year and predicted that the app would be hot. If these user numbers do happen to hold up, don’t be surprised if Viddy turns out to be Facebook’s next billion-dollar acquisition.

iPhone will launch for five US regional carriers today

As noted by Cnet, the iPhone is launching on an additional five US regional carriers today. The carriers include Alaska Communications, Appalachian Wireless (Kentucky and Virgina), Cellcom (Wisconsin and Michigan), nTelos (Virginia), and GCL.

The regional carriers apparently know they’ll have an uphill battle against the national carriers like AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon, so they’re offering the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S at $ 50 discounts over the nationals. With a two year contract, the 8GB iPhone 4S costs $ 49 and the 16, 32, and 64 GB iPhone 4S costs $ 149, $ 249, and $ 349 respectively.

Will TUAW skip its Talkcast tonight?

We meet again, Sunday. At least this one has been mildly entertaining in some respects (for example, the trimumphant return of the Apple Store Playset to ThinkGeek’s front page and TUAW’s honoring of Betteridge’s Law for the day).

While fun, it is not a joke that we’ll be firing up the Talkcast starting at 7PM Pacific time, 10pm Eastern. We’ll discuss App Stores for Mac OS and iOS; specifically the high points and low points of each. We’ll also spend a bit of time on the Fair Labor Association report released this week.

As usual, Kelly’s hosting the show means there will be aftershow. Unlike the cake, the aftershow is NOT a lie. (Sometimes the aftershow has cake discussion as well, but that’s another story.)

Since it’s really all about you, the community, join me won’t you? To participate, you can use the browser-only Talkshoe client, the embedded Facebook app, or download the classic TalkShoe Pro Java client; however, for +5 Interactivity, you should call in. For the web UI, just click the Talkshoe Web button on our profile page at 4 HI/7 PDT/10 pm EDT Sunday. To call in on regular phone or VoIP lines (Viva free weekend minutes!): dial (724) 444-7444 and enter our talkcast ID, 45077 — during the call, you can request to talk by keying in *8.

If you’ve got a headset or microphone handy on your Mac, you can connect via the free X-Lite or other SIP clients (aside from Skype or Google Voice), basic instructions are here. (If you prefer Blink, the pro version is available in the Mac App Store.) Talk to you tonight!

Will a Mac use any wifi signal even if the internet service is not compatible with it?

Question by J C: Will a Mac use any wifi signal even if the internet service is not compatible with it? I have a Mac and a PC. I am planning to change my internet service to another, but the service I want says that it is only compatible with PC’s. The question is if I buy a router and hook it up to the modem will the Mac get the WiFi signal and be able to use it regardless of the service??

Thanks!!

P.S. The PC is running Windows XP (SP2) and the Mac is running Mac OS X Snow Leopard.

Best answer:

Answer by David Hortonthe simple answer is that the internet does not care what your computer is! didgital information is sent in 1 and 0 so as long as you have an ip address and a compatible moddem and you send in any form data and the other end can translate in into usefull data i.e images. video . text.

even plug into the telephone line and dial direct to someone with a moddem on another phoneline while is dial and online you would pay normal line charges.

the service provider just does not want mac on his servers and a wireless router is the same you will of course need software written for that processor that is the problem if your service provider as not got the software written. but the manufacture or the router or moddem may have this.
